Best Time to Visit South Africa
The best time to visit South Africa is generally May–September (safari). This season-by-season guide covers peak, shoulder and low season, the weather you can expect, the festivals that fill hotels and what to pack.
Weather in South Africa
Seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere. Cape Town summers are dry and windy; the winter months are cooler and wetter on the coast but ideal for game viewing, when bush is thin and animals gather at water.
Peak, shoulder and low season
Peak season runs December–February (summer and coastal holidays), with the highest flight and hotel demand. Shoulder season (March–April and September–November) offers similar conditions with thinner crowds. Low season (June–August, which is prime safari season inland) is the cheapest, with less predictable weather or reduced opening hours at some attractions.
Festivals and holidays
South African school holidays in December and January fill coastal towns. Whale season runs roughly June to November.
What to pack for South Africa
Neutral clothing and binoculars for safari, plus warm layers for early-morning game drives.
