Best Time to Visit Japan
The best time to visit Japan is generally March–May (cherry blossom) & October–November. This season-by-season guide covers peak, shoulder and low season, the weather you can expect, the festivals that fill hotels and what to pack.
Weather in Japan
Four distinct seasons. Spring is mild with blossom, June brings the rainy season, July–August are hot and humid, and autumn is clear and comfortable. Winters are cold in the north with heavy snow.
Peak, shoulder and low season
Peak season runs late March–early April (cherry blossom) and October–November (autumn leaves), with the highest flight and hotel demand. Shoulder season (May–June and September) offers similar conditions with thinner crowds. Low season (January–February, plus the humid heart of summer) is the cheapest, with less predictable weather or reduced opening hours at some attractions.
Festivals and holidays
Cherry-blossom weeks, Golden Week (late April–early May) and Obon (mid-August) are the busiest domestic travel periods — book far ahead.
What to pack for Japan
Comfortable shoes, a light rain layer for June, and warm layers for northern winters.
