Best Time to Visit France
The best time to visit France is generally April–June & September–October. This season-by-season guide covers peak, shoulder and low season, the weather you can expect, the festivals that fill hotels and what to pack.
Weather in France
Warm, dry summers in the south and on the Riviera; milder, wetter summers in the north. Spring and autumn are comfortable for sightseeing, and the Alps hold snow from December to April.
Peak, shoulder and low season
Peak season runs July–August, with the highest flight and hotel demand. Shoulder season (April–June and September–October) offers similar conditions with thinner crowds. Low season (November–March, outside the Alps and Christmas) is the cheapest, with less predictable weather or reduced opening hours at some attractions.
Festivals and holidays
Paris empties and the coast fills in August. The Tour de France (July) and wine harvests (September) affect regional availability.
What to pack for France
Light layers and walking shoes for cities; warm kit for alpine trips.
